Initially we thought we were going to be able to conduct an evaluation, but with lack of time, we realized that was no longer feasible. Instead, we decided to take the idea of focusing on the evaluation tools and develop an evaluation how-to of Rachel’s challenge. Our goal was to have a manual to present to UVMC and allow them to continue the evaluation further with our guided manual. During our evaluation of Rachel’s Challenge, it became a concern to us that this program wasn’t really a bullying prevention program, but more a program focused on character building. After a lack of communication between the UVMC and Rachel’s Challenge connections we decided to shift our focus. We still wanted our final product to be a manual, but decided to focus on presenting it to a broader audience. What we went forward with was developing a how-to manual for evaluating an anti-bullying program. As I had already done some background research, getting started went smoothl y. The process of developing the manual began with our previous class work. We used our complied work as a reference point to set up the contents of the manual. Since our class work was focused on Rachel’s Challenge we had to redo everything, minus my background work. Section were divided between Taylor and I and we each were responsible for three sections and manual and split responsibility for continuing research on the background section. Electro-Magnetic Radiation Essay Electromagnetic RadiationElectromagnetic radiation is defined as the emission and transmission of energy in the form of electromagnetic waves (Chang, pp. 246). An electromagnetic wave consists of two waves at perpendicular planes, on representing the electrical field while the other represents the magnetic field. This spectrum is split up into about 81 octaves, much like the octaves of sound, which scientists have categorized in order to depict the usefulness of the different properties. Theoretically electromagnetic waves can be as long as the expansive width of the universe in one wave, to a wavelength the size of a quanta (the smallest amount of energy that can be transmitted). That, however, is at this point in time negligible because we either cannot detect wavelengths so extremely large or infinitesimally small. So generally the spectrum is regarded to be set between 30,000,000 km and .0001 angstroms (1 km is equal to 1 X 10^13 angstroms). The longest and least energetic of the accepted wavelengths are radio waves. Their wavelengths range from 300,000 km to 30 cm and a frequency of 30 kHz to 3,000,000 kHz. The waves are used in the transmission of radio and television signals. AM and FM radio signals fall in the long-wave radio range, while TV signals use the short-wave radio range, somewhere in the 3 m wavelength. Radio waves take up about 30 of the 81 octaves. The next slightly more energetic and shorter wavelength is microwaves. Obviously, most are familiar with microwaves since they are always being used to cook food, but microwaves are also used in radiotelescopes and radar, even the radiation from a neutral hydrogen atom falls in this range. Microwave range extends from wavelengths of 30 cm to .3 cm and frequencies of 1-100 billion cycles per second. This corresponds to 6 1/2 octaves. Then comes the infrared range. While much of the radio spectrum passes easily through our atmosphere, infrared is almost completely blocked off due to absorption by gaseous molecules that reside there. Not much UV can get through the ozone layer, but a little does, and our polluting industrial revolution has caused our protective layer to break down allowing more UV radiation in and larger health problems to the world. It has wavelengths from 3800-100 angstroms, with frequencies from a quadrillion (10^15) to slightly less than 100 quadrillion (10^17). UV occupies about 5 octaves. X-rays, once again, are also well known to the public through their modern medical usage. They are very energetic in nature and extremely harmful to the living bodies, especially in the reproductive sites. They can easily pass through skin and reveal the underlying structure of animals. X-rays have been known to also cause cancer and even mutations. Prolonged exposure leads to radiation poisoning and certain death. Its wavelengths range from 100-.1 angstroms with frequencies of just under 10^17 to 10^20 cycles per second. However, beyond the obvious reasons mentioned in the article, such as termination or voluntary leave, the simple facts are that they were not prepared to work in partnerships and teamwork. Her approaches at times are fierce yet ethical, and with her team, she is determined to get the job done; proving that leadership is an essential part of a managers position. There are three basic types of leadership: transactional leaders, charismatic leaders, and transformational leaders. Transactional leaders are the types who get the job done and stick to the required task. They are hardworking and determined to succeed in performance. Charismatic leaders are leaders who have a vision and use their ability to motivate to reach their goals. Charismatic leaders use their motivational techniques to encourage employees to work hard. They are also creative and make it so that employees can work hard but be excited about it at the same time. Transformational leaders are leaders who strive toward change. These leaders are the ones who can bring life back into a failing company with great success. While these types of leadership are characterized separately, it is possible for a leader to be more than one type. When Audrey came to be General Manager of Kohls back in 1997, Kohls was excelling in sales and profit. Her energy and motivation (although sometimes a bit sarcastic), as well as her visions for the store, classify her as a charismatic leader. However, I would also classify her as a transactional leader. Besides motivating employees, Audrey is hardworking and determined to get the job done. She runs her store efficiently and tries to keep it rolling as a smooth operation. THE SIX STYLES OF LEADERSHIP Leadership is a complex position that varies in many ways. In the Harvard Business Review, writer Daniel Goleman explains the six distinct styles of leadership. Coercive leaders demand immediate compliance. Authoritative leaders mobilize their people toward a vision. Affiliative leaders create emotional bonds and compatibility. Democratic leaders build consensus through participation. Pacesetting leaders expect excellence and self direction, and coaching leaders develop people for the future.(Goleman) Golemans research found that leaders dont necessarily rely on just any one of styles listed above. In fact, most managers use all the different styles on the job at some point or another. Many of theses management styles are practiced within the management team of Kohls.
